On today’s episode of the podcast, Forrest and I are joined by Dr. Chris Germer, a clinical psychologist and lecturer on psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, to explore how compassion can serve as an antidote to shame.

Chris is the co-founder of the Mindful Self-Compassion Program, and is a founding faculty member of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. We begin the episode by exploring Chris’s personal history with self-compassion, including a life-changing experience he had in therapy.

We then moved on to the aspects of self-compassion, some of the ways its been misunderstood, and how self-compassion can have both soft, internalized aspects and powerful, active elements. This led us to a discussion focused on how compassion can be an active tool to reduce experiences related to shame.
