Tara Brach, Ph. D., is a clinical psychologist and teacher of Buddhist meditation. She is the author of Radical Acceptance (Bantam, 2003) and True Refuge (Bantam, 2013.) Jack Kornfield trained as a Buddhist monk in the monasteries of Thailand, India and Burma. He has taught meditation internationally since 1974 and is one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. He began his training after graduating from Dartmouth College in Asian Studies in 1967. Then he joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to the Public Health Service in northeast Thailand, which is home to several of the world’s oldest Buddhist forest monasteries. He met and studied under the Buddhist master Ven. Ajahn Chah, as well as the Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw of Burma. After returning to the United States, Jack co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, with fellow meditation teachers Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein. He is also a founding teacher of the Spirit Rock Center in Woodacre, California, where he currently lives and teaches. Over the years, Jack has taught in centers and universities worldwide, led International Buddhist Teacher meetings with the Dalai Lama and worked with many of the great teachers of our time. He holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and is a father and activist.

Paul Gilbert is the head of the Mental Health Research Unit and Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Derby. Dr. Porges is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. He is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he directed the Brain-Body Center, and at the University of Maryland, where he chaired the Department of Human Development and directed the Institute for Child Study. He served as president of the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological, and Cognitive Sciences. Roshi Joan Halifax, Ph.D., is a Buddhist teacher, Zen priest, anthropologist, and pioneer in the field of end-of-life care. She is Founder, Abbot, and Head Teacher of Upaya Institute and Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her Ph.D. in medical anthropology in 1973 and has lectured on the subject of death and dying at many academic institutions and medical centers around the world. She received a National Science Foundation Fellowship in Visual Anthropology, was an Honorary Research Fellow in Medical Ethnobotany at Harvard University, and was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Library of Congress.

She studied for a decade with Zen Teacher Seung Sahn and was a teacher in the Kwan Um Zen School. She received the Lamp Transmission from Thich Nhat Hanh, and was given Inka by Roshi Bernie Glassman.

Is the Foundations of Well-Being (FWB) psychotherapy?
No, it is not.
This is an educational program, not treatment for any physical or mental health condition. Participants take responsibility for their own experience in the program, and Rick Hanson, his staff, and the guest experts do not have a professional relationship with them.

Are there any risks in this program?
The Foundations program emphasizes the having and the internalizing of experiences of various inner strengths – psychological resources – such as mindfulness, resilience, gratitude, compassion, and courage. These experiences are usually enjoyable, and as people develop inner strengths, they typically become more able to handle the challenges and other risks of life – and with less sense of upset or overwhelm.
Nonetheless, as with any educational process of personal growth, psychological material may get stirred up for you that is uncomfortable. Please engage the Foundations of Well-Being at a pace and a depth that feel good to you. Draw upon the coping skills and other inner strengths you already have as well as the ones you are developing through this program. And if need be, please reach out to professional help if that would serve you.

Are you going to track the results of the program?
We’re doing a voluntary before-and-after survey about the Foundations program.
The survey is simple: participants who choose to will fill out a collection of standard, widely-used questionnaires at the beginning of the program and soon after it ends. For participants, these questionnaires could be an interesting way to get a snapshot of where they are at the beginning of the program, and where they are after at the end. More widely, the responses will be helpful in clarifying the results of online experiential programs such as the Foundations of Well-Being (FWB).
Participating in this survey is completely voluntary. I’m just requesting participants help. You are most welcome to be in FWB without being involved with this survey.
We need names so that we can compare responses before and after FWB. All responses to the questionnaires will be held in confidence by my staff and me.
The individual responses to the survey will be gathered together for statistical analyses that I may write up after the program ends. In other words, only information about the group of people taking FWB would be presented, and never anything identifiable about any individual. Because of the number of people in FWB, we just can’t give back to individuals the responses on their questionnaires.

The Foundations program is not psychotherapy, coaching, or mindfulness training. But it could be a useful adjunct to these, as well as to human resources training, to classes in self-compassion or stress management, and to informal personal growth practices, such as meditation.
For example, in FWB you’ll learn how to turn your passing experiences in psychotherapy or other activities into lasting psychological resources encoded in your brain. You’ll also develop particular resources – such as self-understanding, emotional balance, vitality, and assertiveness – that could increase the benefits you get in any kind of mental health activity.
If you are in psychotherapy while you are doing the Foundations program, please tell your therapist about this.
How old do you need to be to take the Foundations program?
You must be 18 or older to register.
If you are under 18 but are a teenager who is self aware and motivated, this program could be helpful to you. Please have a parent or guardian register for you, and have this person send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, giving their permission for you to take FWB.
What are the Terms and Conditions of the program?
People who register for the Foundations of Well-Being agree to these Terms and Conditions:
- I am 18 or older, or a teenager whose parent or guardian has registered for me and communicated his or her permission to email@example.com for me to take this program.
- I understand that this is an educational program, not treatment for any physical or mental health condition. I take responsibility for my own experience in the program, and I am able to manage my reactions to program material on my own. I understand that Rick Hanson, his staff, and the guest experts do not have a professional relationship with me.
- I understand that any information conveyed to Rick Hanson in the context of the program may be read by members of his staff. Dr. Hanson may refer to comments or questions we receive in his presentations or other public communications; if he does this, he will do his best to leave out any identifying information, but please understand that any information you send to us is not confidential.
